Hawaii is made up of eight large islands, along with many small ones. The location of Hawaiian islands, seen in the direction from northwest to southeast are, Ni'ihau, Kaua'i, O'ahu, Moloka'i, Lana'i, Kaho'olawe, Maui, and Hawai'i. The last island is the largest among all eight. As a result, it is often referred to as the "Big Isle", or "Big Island", in order to avoid confusing its name with that of the entire state. Hawaii is the land of volcanoes. The world's tallest mountain, an inactive volcano named Mauna Kea, is a part of the islands. It rises to a towering 33,476 feet from the ocean floor, which is way above the height of Mount Everest from sea level. The islands of Hawaii were all formed by the solidification of molten magma from the volcanoes, and Mauna Kea is considered to be the reason behind formation of the largest island in the state.
